Digital microaggressions and LGBTQ+ youth: Exploring potential impacts and opportunities for educational intervention

Background
LGBTQ+ youth often rely heavily on digital technologies for identity development, social relationships, LGBTQ+-specific information, and psychological support.
Digital environments nevertheless expose youth to anti-LGBTQ+ prejudice, ranging from overt victimization to more subtle digital microaggressions.
Microaggressions differ from conventional cyberbullying because they can be subtle, unintentional, indirect, or ambient and do not necessarily involve repeated targeted attacks.
Examples include:
Anti-LGBTQ+ misinformation.
Homophobic or transphobic language.
Dismissal or invalidation of LGBTQ+ experiences.
Stereotyping.
Heteronormative and cisnormative assumptions.
These experiences may operate as repeated minority stressors that incrementally contribute to psychological distress.
This study examines relationships among different types of digital microaggressions, perceived stress, mental-health symptoms, and psychological well-being.
Study Description
Data came from an online survey conducted between November 2019 and February 2020.
The sample comprised 1,804 LGBTQ+ youth aged 14–24 (M = 16.0, SD = 1.94) from:
UK: 46.5%.
US: 31.5%.
Canada: 22.1%.
Nearly all participants identified as White (97.8%), and 43.6% were gender diverse.
Digital microaggressions were measured using the 45-item Anti-LGBTQ+ Digital Microaggressions Scale (ADMS), comprising six factors:
Direct – Experiencing Discrimination.
Direct – Diminishing Experiences.
Direct – Experiencing Assumptions.
Indirect – Witnessing Prejudice.
Indirect – Witnessing Discrimination.
Indirect – Discriminatory Messaging.
Outcomes included:
Perceived stress.
Depressive symptoms.
Anxiety.
Anger.
Autonomy.
Environmental mastery.
Personal growth.
Positive relations with others.
Self-acceptance.
Structural equation modelling (SEM) in Mplus was used to examine both direct relationships between digital microaggressions and outcomes and indirect relationships operating through perceived stress.
Age, race, transgender identity, and country of residence were included as control variables.
The final structural model demonstrated strong fit: CFI = .964, TLI = .961, SRMR = .044, RMSEA = .038.
Unique Findings
Digital microaggression dimensions were generally:
Positively associated with stress, depression, anxiety, and anger.
Negatively associated with several dimensions of psychological well-being.
Most bivariate relationships were small-to-medium in magnitude.
Experiencing discrimination emerged as the most consistent direct digital risk factor.
Direct discriminatory experiences included targeted prejudicial comments, slurs, and messages undermining youths' LGBTQ+ identities or experiences.
These experiences were associated with increased perceived stress and several poorer mental-health or well-being outcomes.
Witnessing discrimination was also a particularly important indirect form of microaggression.
Only experiencing discrimination (β = .246) and witnessing discrimination (β = .143) significantly predicted greater perceived stress.
Perceived stress was, in turn, the largest predictor of the mental-health and psychological well-being outcomes, supporting the relevance of minority stress processes.
Conclusions
The findings support viewing digital microaggressions as potentially cumulative minority stressors, particularly when youth directly experience or witness discriminatory content.
Interventions should avoid treating withdrawal from digital environments as the default solution. Restricting internet access can inadvertently remove LGBTQ+ youths' access to affirming relationships, identity information, and other protective resources.
The findings evidence a need for:
LGBTQ+-inclusive digital literacy education.
Supportive and digitally literate adults.
Collaborative rather than punitive responses to harmful digital experiences.
Teaching youth how to critically evaluate digital information.
Constructive responses to digital prejudice.
Digital allyship and active bystandership.
Coping strategies and access to mental-health supports.
Future research should investigate intersectional digital microaggressions, distinguish digital from offline minority stress, use longitudinal designs, and evaluate interventions that preserve the benefits of online participation while reducing exposure to harm.
