Trans* history and youth well-being in La Paz, Mexico

“Promoting Trans* Youth’s Mental Health in La Paz, Mexico” is a photo-voice project that aims to learn more about trans* youths’ mental health through photo-voice, raise awareness, and promote positive change. This is a community-based project, done in collaboration with La Paz es Diversa, a local LGBTQ+ organization.

Research in Mexico has shown that trans* youths are more likely to experience mental health issues, and they’re twice as likely to receive violence from their families upon ‘coming out’ than cisgender LGB+ youths (INEGI, 2021). On top of this, Mexico is the second country with the most trans* murders in the world, with 52 murders registered between October 2022 and September 2023 (Transgender Europe, 2023). Nonetheless, research on trans* issues, especially research that includes trans* youths’ voices, is almost non-existent. This study aims to involve trans* youths significantly to further understand the mental health barriers and supports they have, and raise their voices to inform public policy in the state, as well as increase awareness around trans* youths’ issues in La Paz.
