Willem Stander

Dr Willem Stander (He/Him, Co-Chair, UK Regional Network) is a Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham. His research spans psychology, health, and social care, employing mixed methods, participatory approaches, and randomised controlled trial designs. Willem’s work focuses on mental health help-seeking behaviours and online harms among marginalised populations, particularly LGBTQ+ youth and care-experienced young people, with the aim of informing inclusive practice and policy. He is currently leading studies as Principal Investigator on care-experienced young people’s mental health help-seeking in England (the COLLAGE study), as well as research on online blackmail among LGBTQ+ young people in the UK and Channel Islands. Willem has led and collaborated on projects with leading UK and international organisations, including the NSPCC, Stonewall, and The Trevor Project, helping to translate research into meaningful real-world impact.
